Account books, 1913-1937.

This collection consists of sixteen account books of the auction sales, 1913-1937, of Stan V. Henkels and Stan V. Henkels, Jr. (who evidently took over the business in October, 1931), a shipping book, 1923-1935, and a billing book, 1924-1937. Most of the entries apparently were made by Stanislaus V. Henkels, Jr. ( - ), who sold the books to AAS in 1942 (see also, AAS correspondence with David Mearns, Library of Congress, 12 June 1956; Clements Library, 16 February 1942). The shipping book lists engravings, antiques, autograph collections, etc., their purchase price, and cost and method of shipping; the billing book is a list of dated, alphabetized purchasers and payments due. The sixteen sales account books contain lists of all general materials sold at auction, prices of specific items next to the names of purchasers (their "buyer" names, whether genuine or not), and consignors. The books contain hundreds of important book sales as well as sales of historic portraits, views, maps, engravings, and relics. Many of the items were not recorded in Book Prices Current.

18 v. ; folio.
